If you’re planning your Florida retirement and thinking about how you’ll spend your time, consider volunteering at the Humane Society of Polk County (HSPC). The shelter is located in Winter Haven, a short drive from Lake Ashton.

This is not a large facility; typically it has about 25 dogs and 25 cats in residence. Volunteers are essential to help the shelter run smoothly, increase adoptions, and make the animals more comfortable and happier. Just some of the ways you can make volunteering at the HSPC part of your Florida retirement lifestyle include:

• Dog washes. The HSPC holds dog washes during the summer months to generate income and give the public a chance to learn about their pets. Be prepared to get wet!

• Kennel cleaning. Help the HSPC staff clean the kennels and feed the animals.

• Adoption desk support. Provide clerical support for the staff at the front desk. This includes answering the phones, completing adoption paperwork and providing general care information.

• Adoption follow-up calls. Call past adopters to see how the adopted animal is adjusting. These calls can be made from the shelter office or you can do them at home.

• Event support. Help plan, organize and participate in special events and fundraisers in the community.

• Foster program. Care for animals in need in your Florida retirement home on a temporary basis. Usually this is for animals too young to be adopted. Medical expenses are covered by the HSPC, you provide the love.

• Newsletter. Research and write articles, edit submitted articles, help with other tasks necessary to product and distribute the newsletter.
